First Sunday of Advent

Advent is a wonderful opportunity to take the time to “Listen.. with the ear of your heart”,  as Saint Benedict calls us to in the Prologue to his Rule.  This listening, echoes the Wisdom tradition of scripture, in particular, the book of Proverbs. It is the sort that engages our whole being – body, mind and soul.  This “listening” presumes a turning of ourselves toward God through the ordinary events of our lives.  As we move through our days, may we be more attuned to “listen” to those people and events that cross our path ,not only with our ears , but with our whole being. Although this “listening” may take more energy than we feel we have, we may also be blessed to recognize Christ present in our daily lives in surprising ways.

Don’t have a copy of the Rule of Benedict handy?  Select this link for access to the Rule: http://www.e-benedictine.com/go/ and choose from the column on the left under Saint Benedict : “His Rule”.

About WalkingwithBenedict

I love how scripture comes alive with messages for our lives today. In praying with scripture, we are called into deeper relationship with God and others. We are called to the growth in love, hospitality, peace, humility, stewardship and hope. St Benedict's Rule provides a lens for how scripture can be lived in our lives today whether we live inside or outside a monastery.
